It was planned, produced and primarily animated by and adapted and by in his directorial debut, with chief and by Yūichirō Sueyoshi, by Tōru Hishiyama and groundwork and further animation direction by Masahiko Kubo. Contents • • • • • • Plot [ ] Nishi is a 20-year-old loser with dreams of becoming a comic book artist. One late evening he runs into his childhood crush, Myon, on the subway. Nishi declares he has always loved her, but she tells him she is due to marry someone else. They go to her father's restaurant, and see Myon's father and her elder sister Yan (who runs the restaurant). Nishi also meets Myon's fiancee, Ryo. Two yakuza gangsters enter, Atsu and a senior yakuza whom Atsu calls Aniki (lit. A term used by Yakuza to refer to each other). They are looking for Myon's father, who seduced and stole Atsu's girlfriend, and now hides cowering behind a corner. It is later revealed through flashbacks that the senior yakuza is actually the first boyfriend of the girls' mother, whom was also seduced away by her husband during a disco in their youth. As Atsu threatens Myon with a gun, Ryo steps in and tries to punch Atsu, but instead gets knocked out. Atsu then prepares to rape Myon, who calls out Nishi's name. Atsu turns on Nishi, who is rolled in a ball, terrified, placing his pistol against Nishi's anus. The gun goes off when Nishi suddenly moves, thus killing him instantly. The senior Yakuza, offended by Atsu's lack of control, shoots him dead, and then nonchalantly orders dinner. Meanwhile, Nishi is in some sort of where he encounters a being whose physical image changes every fraction of a second, Kami-sama (God). Kami-sama directs Nishi to walk into a red portal where he will disappear, but at the last moment Nishi runs for the opposite blue portal in order to return to life. Kami-sama becomes impressed by Nishi's sheer will to live, and so lets him escape. Nishi returns to the moment just before Atsu pulled the trigger. This time, Nishi seizes Atsu's gun with his buttocks, and shoots him dead. He, Yan and Myon all pile into the yakuza's car, leaving the father and Ryo (still unconscious) behind. They speed off, followed by the massed yakuzas. The Yakuza boss rings Nishi using the yakuza's car phone and reveals that Atsu was a player on the Japanese national soccer team. Then after further chase the boss has his men force the trio in to a dead end on a bridge. However, Nishi steers the car off the bridge and they are swallowed up by an enormous whale. Inside the whale, they meet an old man who was formerly yakuza and has been trapped in the whale for more than 30 years. (He is later shown through flashbacks to be the father of the senior Yakuza shown earlier). He shows them to the elaborate suspended house he has constructed over the 'sea' inside the whale's belly. Nishi attempts to escape the whale but he fails and they resign themselves to life inside the whale. Yan practices dancing and art, Myon practices swimming (a dream she gave up when her breasts got bigger), Nishi practices writing and drawing humorous manga and he and Myon finally become sexually intimate. They attempt to leave the whale, again failing. And the old man reveals that the water level inside the whale is rising, and he believes the whale is probably dying. They concoct a plan to make a motor boat out using spare parts and fuel from the car they arrived in. On the day before the final match of the soccer World Cup, the whale returns to Osaka (their home town) and Yan, Nishi, Myon, as well as the Old Man, manage to escape. As the four fly through the air, the film returns to its very first scene, with Myon running from the Yakuza, only this time she does not get her leg caught in the door of the train, and the Yakuza is left behind on the platform. This is followed by a lengthy montage, similar to that of the opening credits, showing the histories of the various characters. The movie ends ambiguously, with the phrase 'This Story Has Never Ended' appearing before the credits roll. Cloud Atlas is a hot mess. There is about half a good movie here. The themes presented are relevant: love, dignity, freedom. Unfortunately they are sometimes presented in such a way as to seem trite or even cliched. There are also some strange and baffling elements that just don't work. I'm also going to get this out of the way right now: I was not a fan of the use of yellowface and whiteface on non-Asian and non-Caucasian actors, but not for the politically correct reasons a lot of people were. I didn't feel that the characterizations were racist or offensive. My main problem was that with a few exceptions, it looked really unconvincing. Of the six stories, I was most fond of the tale of Sonmi-451 (Neo Seoul, 2144). Her story was dark and tragic yet hopeful at the same time. The world she inhabits is a glitzy dystopia built upon the worst excesses of contemporary corporate culture. Of all the sequences, this one and the story of Robert Frobisher (Cambridge and Edinburgh, 1936) would have made enjoyable full-length films in their own right. I liked the sequence set in the UK, 2012, starring Jim Broadbent as Timothy Cavendish in what was essentially a dark comedy vignette about an aging publisher and his gangster client (Tom Hanks). Even a throwaway joke about soylent green being people actually relates to a disturbing element in the Neo Seoul sequence. The story set in the South Pacific in 1849 about a young lawyer who falls sick during a voyage and is under the care of a doctor who it emerges is poisoning him in order to steal his belongings but is saved by a runaway slave fell flat. Tom Hanks as Doctor Goose had a false nose and prosthetic buck teeth which made him look like a character from League of Gentlemen (the British comedy series, not the crappy adaptation of a good Alan Moore comic book). Predictably the lawyer, who is helping the slave by hiding him and then later gets him work as a sailor on the ship, become friends. When the lawyer returns home he declares to his slave-owning father-in-law that he and his wife will go east to aid with the abolition efforts. It should be powerful but it just feels cliched and somewhat cheesy. I don't have too much to say about the sequence in which Halle Berry plays the main role. It was neither good nor bad and felt like an homage to movies of the era in which it was set, namely the early 1970s, featuring a tough, independent black journalist whistle-blower uncovering a conspiracy at a nuclear power plant run by an unscrupulous business man. Taken on its own, it could have made a rather average thriller with a few good moments of tension. The sequence set on a post-apocalyptic Hawaii in the year 2321, just stank. It reminded me of Battlefield Earth, but with better production values and no use of dutch angles that I can remember. Tom Hanks plays a superstitious coward belonging to a tribe of people with vaguely Maori-like tattoos on their faces. He is plagued by hallucinations of Hugo Weaving as a character that can best be described as a goblin with a top hat, who I think is supposed to represent his fear and religious hang-ups. Tom Hanks' people live in constant fear of cannibals on horseback with fearsome facepaint. Halle Berry plays a character from some nice,shiny utopia where they have pretty, shiny vehicles and fusion power. She's on the island looking for some ancient secret which she tells Tom Hanks is 'The true true.' Or some such childish baby-talk. It's all very confusing and stupid and ends with Tom Hanks and Halle Berry living happily ever after on some distant planet with two dozen grandchildren sitting around a campfire listening to Grampy Tom Hanks tell stories. I haven't read the book, so I can't really compare it the source material. The principal cast appears throughout the movie in multiple roles because they're reincarnations of characters from earlier time periods, but it's not presented in chronological order. The kind of junk hormone-enriched teenagers gravitate toward in their late night quests to witness the most horrific horrors conceived. That's not bash to gorehounds, as most of us savor the occasional dollop of agonizing cinematic suffering. Although gore alone does not a good horror film make, and this is where Necronos falters. Its threadbare story merely acts to facilitate prolonged, goofy scenes of torture and death. Instead of focusing on any character development, the actors act as bodies to drench in what mostly looks like Hawaiian Punch in clumsily edited dismemberments galore. With the focus on mutilation is so strong, Rohnstock never quite follows through setting up any protagonists. Video and Audio: Troma Team's non-anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen presentation looks decent considering the feature's eroded digital video origins. The same goes for the flat-sounding German Dolby 2.0 audio, certainly not home theater demo material and never will be. The white English subtitles are needlessly wordy and quite small. Special Features: The only Necronos-related supplements are a short teaser, trailer, and behind-the-scenes slideshow. The rest are several trailers for other recent Troma fodder. The DVD cover is reversible with either tame or (very) graphic artwork. How else to explain expecting people to pay for the feature length b-roll he frequently passes off as cinema or the sheer gall it takes to promote Eric Roberts as the star of your film knowing he does not actually appear in it, merely providing brief voiceovers at the very beginning and end? It’s been quite some time since I last reviewed a David DeCoteau film – with good reason. I wasn’t planning to watch or review this one, either. I was kind of fascinated when I saw that the long time b-to-z grade filmmaker dropped four new movies onto VOD this past Friday. One, Asian Ghost Story starring 90’s action heroine Cynthia Rothrock, dealt with the vengeful spirit of a Chinese rail worker that comes back for some reason as a Japanese ninja killing college kids in the woods. Another, Evil Exhumed, from the looks of both trailers seemed to be roughly the exact same film except the ninja with a katana sword was instead a mummy brandishing a scythe. I should have known better. I do know better. Yet, thanks to a friend’s Twitter rant over the weekend about the lack of quality mummy movies, I decided to give Evil Exhumed a look even though I knew I would probably regret it. Knowing what I was potentially in for with Evil Exhumed; I decided to exhume an old review technique I hadn’t dusted off in quite a long time. A young man hell bent on revenge uses dark forces to reanimate a recently unearthed mummy! Already more plot than I’ve come to expect from previous DeCoteau films. 00:04:00 – More Eric Roberts’ voiceover yet still no actual movie to speak of. 00:07:50 – Nothing of a prologue ate up five minutes. Opening credits now eat up two more. I think I see where this is headed. 00:09:45 – Phone call. Something about a professor we haven’t seen summoning some students to these woods to help unearth (Pacific Northwest?) Native American peat bog mummies “like the ones found in Ireland”. 00:10:30 – Guy takes off his shirt for no reason. Yep, it’s a David DeCoteau movie. 00:10:45 – Shirtless guy silently walking in the woods. The cosmic ballet begins again. 00:12:00 – Guy walks. Mummy stalks. Pulse-pounding music comes to an abrupt stop because even it realized nothing was actually happening. 00:14:00 – All that alleged suspense building to an off-camera kill. Yep, it’s a David DeCoteau film. 00:14:45 – Another character. Another phone call. I knew I should have gone with the Chinese railway samurai ninja ghost flick. 00:15:40 – Yet another character. Yet another phone call. The premise is being conveyed via phone tag between on-screen characters and non-characters not actually in the movie. 00:18:00 – Someone walking very slowly through a hallway. Yep, it’s a David DeCoteau movie. 00:19:15 – More phone tag. David DeCoteau once again stretching the limits of what constitutes “written and directed by”. 00:21:00 – Native American peat bog mummies like the ones you find in Ireland look remarkably like high-end Egyptian mummy costumes found at a Spirit of Halloween store. #culturalappropriation 00:24:00 – Can you guess what’s happening now? Did you guess “shirtless guy walking through the woods while a mummy slowly stalks him from a distance”? I could be binge watching “Luke Cage” right now. 00:27:20 – Our human villain, the victim of a prank the year before, calls forth the “spirit of the tribe” to do his bidding. Does that mean the killer mummy has been acting independently up until now? 00:28:00 – Eight solid minutes of absolutely nothing leads to yet another off-scream kill. #yepitsadaviddecoteaumovie 00:28:30 – An actual phone conversation between two actual characters. These calls still just keep repeating the same non-plot points. This film takes “phoning it in” to pathetic new heights. 00:29:45 – The vengeful prank victim is named Brundle. I accidentally hit the screen causing the movie to skip six minutes and instantly realized I had not missed anything. 00:43:20 – Mummy raises arm, slashing motion with scythe and an off-camera scream. Another 12 minutes of my life I’ll never get back. 00:44:00 – I’d be better off binge watching grass grow. 00:45:00 – Another phone call. Two more shirtless guys. Another recap of info we already know. 00:46:30 – So a guy is on a supernatural killing spree because some college kids locked him in an attic overnight? Like that time when I was a kid some bullies locked me in a closet for ten minutes and I got even by conjuring Pumpkinhead to kill them all. #parity 00:48:15 – A guy just put on a shirt to go running through the woods. I feel like anyone who pays to watch this should get double their money back. #classactionlawsuit 01:08:00 – If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it can David DeCoteau still film it for 20 minutes and pass it off as a motion picture? 01:09:15 – Actual dialogue between actual characters in the same room for only the second time in the movie! 01:10:00 – This movie reminds me a lot of an old drive-in cheapie called Death Curse of Tartu in that I would rather be watching Death Curse of Tartu instead. 01:14:25 – The mummy’s name is Zadarak. I love his Cajun seasoning. 01:15:00 – Somehow DeCoteau managed to stretch five minutes of story into 75 minutes of screen time and then had the nerve to not even give the movie an actual ending. I wonder if Asian Ghost Story also had a similar anticlimax that didn’t even involve the supernatural killer and did Cynthia Rothrock also only appear by way of blathering voiceover? I know I’ll never find out. Even giving Evil Exhumed zero stars feels too charitable. Calling it a movie at all feels too charitable. This is the filmmaking equivalent of the Nigerian Prince email scam—and I fell for it again. #sadtrombone I get that guys like DeCoteau are just trying to eke out a living but at any point does a modicum of shame come into play knowing you’re just flagrantly ripping people off? Or maybe David DeCoteau should be considered an inspiration to all aspiring filmmakers for proving once again that even if you don’t have any money or an actual script you can still make a movie? I got the review code back when it released in September, popped it into my PS4, and then promptly forgot about it until I scrolled across it after finishing Dead Rising 4. It’s understandable how I’d miss it. The game had practically zero fanfare, even managing to release on Steam with a “Horror” tag without my noticing. I do like to check out indie games, but their promotional description was uninspired. It claims to be a game where the enemies learn from what you do, which I’m pretty sure is how competent video game AI just works. Hell even F.E.A.R. Back in 2005 had a enemies that would learn to avoid your grenades and flank you. ECHO takes this idea, distills it to its core, and makes it terrifying. You play as En, a girl who awakens on a spaceship in a distant dystopian future. Greeted by an AI that is most generously described as pissed off, you stumble your way through the halls of the ship to find a suit that supports your atrophied body. You descend on a shuttle to a strange planet that appears to be a series of perfectly cut icy squares atop mechanical pillars, and soon find your way into the sterile and lifeless halls of a vast palace. It’s disturbing how how close it comes to a real building. It’s wrong in the dimensions, too vast and too repetitious to be real. This doesn’t last long, as you soon activate the system using a strange red cube on your back. The power goes out, and an objective appears thousands of kilometers below you. As you make your way to the first of many elevators down, the power goes out again. Suddenly, the air is breathable. The power goes out again, and there are flowers. One more time, and food appears. It seems that the palace is coming to life. After the next blackout, a strange black stain appears on the ground. After the next one, it gets bigger. After the next, it now registers as alive. These writhing masses piece by piece evolve into the enemies of Echo: clones of En. The spectacle of watching these monsters all too quickly go from slugs to lurching masses to copies of you is one of the most heart pounding and disturbing sequences in any horror game. Seriously, this tops the RE7 family introduction. The way it seamlessly blends into the world and gives you hints at what is to come is what true game design is about. “Stop hitting yourself dur hur” After the copies are fully functional, you’ll begin to notice that sometimes it seems the game takes a “picture” of you. Leaving a silhouette behind, this happens when you perform any action more complicated than walking. At first, it’s unclear exactly why this is happening. As you continue, you quickly find that this is the palace learning from you. The frequent blackouts are the palace rebooting, teaching the robots the actions you did in the previous cycle. Open a door, and the copies will learn to open doors. Shoot your gun, and they will learn to shoot. This is where the enemies get their name: “Echoes.” Echoes only remember things from the previous cycle, meaning they will forget if you don’t do that again during the next powered up period. Blackouts are triggered by completing a certain number of unique actions, so eventually you’ll have to do something that makes you vulnerable. There are certain actions that are far more advantageous than others. Shouting, crouching, and stealth kills are all practically useless for the Echoes. Walking across water, shooting guns, and God forbid running are all things best left from their short memories. You do NOT want them learning how to run The result is a terrifying game of keeping the Echoes just stupid enough to survive. As the game goes on, their memories will expand and more complex actions will be learnable. There’s also a period of time where the power goes down before the actual blackout which allows you to perform actions without the palace learning from you. These are the times you want to sprint and take out your pistol. You might think this system sounds easily exploitable, but here’s the kicker. Enemies do not stay dead. Even if you kill them with a pistol shot, melee weapon, or stealth kill, all downed enemies revive in the next cycle. There’s no sneaking around and snapping all the necks to win. When you realize that no matter how many necks you snap or bullets you fire, the same unending horde is always hunting you, the game truly reveals itself as horror. Not that you won’t do a fair amount of sneaking Despite looking just like En, the Echoes also fall hard into the uncanny valley. Despite copying you, they don’t really “learn” the action. If you crouch around, they will just randomly crouch around without any real reason. Shout, and they just shout randomly. They will use the useful skills like vaulting and door opening to pursue you, but not actively hunt you. They kind of just amble about until they spot you. If they catch you, you’ll have to fight them off as they stare into you with their cold, dead, unthinking eyes. No matter how you slice this, it’s spooky It’s a kind of horror that doesn’t rely on chainsaw decapitations and weird bug monsters. It’s sterile, clean, mechanical. The unrelenting inhumanness of it all is what gets to you. It’s heavily aided by brilliant visual design and a haunting score. Seriously, the music is beautiful. I’m not one for video game soundtracks, but I’d listen to ECHO’s music and feel feelings. I don’t really want to spoil things, since learning about this strange and alien world is a lot of what makes it appealing. So I’ll just say that the plot makes more sense as it goes along. The ending is kind of weak, but once you see the bigger picture you’ll realize that the world of ECHO is much broader than these vast illogical halls. The nature of the palace and the logic of its inner workings will always be a mystery, but En’s journey is what this is about I don’t want you be confused by my score however, as the game is far from perfect. There are very few mechanics, so the niggles I have are amplified. First off, the way you die is kinda bullshit. If you get caught by an Echo, you’ll have to spam the struggle key to knock it off. This will put you in a vulnerable state, meaning that for about 10 seconds the next one to grab you will kill you. You can fight two off at once, but three will kill you. So if two are chasing you, you’re incentivized to let them both catch you and then fight them off. In the game’s more crowded sections, this becomes a very difficult task. Often times I’d have a second enemy be just out of range of catching me in time, meaning I’d fight the first off and the second would instantly kill me. It’s a big problem when so many of the deaths stem not from player error, but general bullshit. This is also going to make me sound like an idiot, but the game also just takes way too much brain to play. Make no mistake, despite the gun and stealth kills, ECHO is at its core a puzzle game. There is no challenge you can approach without taking careful stock of enemy positions, what actions you do, and your eternally limited ammo supply. It’s hard in a very cerebral way, and this is from a guy who plays Dark Souls religiously. For some, the game is hard to just have fun with. Don’t get me wrong, I respect the shit out of it. If you do Sudoku for fun in your free time, you’ll love the challenge. But at the end of the day games are supposed to be fun, and unless you’re in a very specific mood then ECHO is hard to just fuck around with. If you find yourself in this situation, you’re in for reloading a checkpoint The length you’ll get out of ECHO is directly proportional to how hard you hunt for the collectibles. I watched one decent runthrough that took just over 4 hours. My runthrough took 12. There is a lot of challenge you can impose on yourself if you want to find every collectible chime and power core in the game. As I said in the previous paragraph, the game is hard to have fun with, so collectible hunting really did feel like a chore. But hey, at least it wasn’t just finding every tchotchke on a map the size of Egypt. ECHO is one of those rare indie gems that I’ll tell everyone to play but and no one will. At the end of the day the mechanics are just too weird for the average gamer to wrap their head around. I can just see the average CoD player scratching their head in bewilderment that the game would give them a gun that doesn’t kill things forever. That being said, the purity of design and breathtaking atmosphere really makes this game worth every penny. I can’t promise you’ll love it, but anyone that appreciates games as art will not want to miss this in their collection. It’s also scary as a motherfucker. Starring Whitney Gries, Travina Springer, Patrick Keane Directed by Todd Spence and Zak White I appreciate the fact that it can’t be easy to cram legitimate suspense into a runtime of just three and a half minutes, but writing and directing duo Zak White and Todd Spence did a pretty good job with their new short film Where Is It. I also appreciate that it’s considered bad luck to use function in movie titles, so I’ll let the lack of a question mark slide. After arriving home from vacation, a young woman named Em thanks her friend Sara for looking after her house. She even forgives her for accidentally breaking the old mirror that had been hanging on the wall since before she moved in, until she notices the bloody words “Where Is It” written in its place. Guess all those old myths about breaking mirrors leading to bad luck were true after all. Where Is It was presented entirely in the format of social media found footage, a style much better suited to shorts than features (no disrespect to Unfriended). And we’ve all experienced the pain of having our internet screwing up at vital moments, so White and Spence were wise to tap into that frustration by making Sara’s connection begin to slowdown when shit starts getting real. And I won’t spoil the ending, but I will say that she really shouldn’t have broken that mirror. And that goblins should spend more time in school so that they know how to use punctuation. Anyway, considering the amount of scares packed into its short runtime, it’s hard not to recommend Where Is It. There was a time when the most eratic of flashing lights and thunderous of random screams would only excite me. Bring on the visual holocaust of lights and colors, I can take it! The more your monster makes my screen shake like I took bad acid during an earthquake, the better. I don’t know when exactly I became an old man, but >Observer_ definitely showed me that I am. Along with the typical video game photosensitivity warning, the game should come with two Advil and a Dramamine. Please stop punching my eyeballs! I supposed I should tell you what the game is about before I get into how it all gave me a migraine. >Observer_ is a bit old to be reviewing at this point, initially released back in August. But with the Game of the Year list on the horizon, I’m trying to knock out all of the games that should be contenders that I happened to miss. I loved Bloober Team’s previous game Layers of Fear, so I was actually excited for >Observer_. No real good reason why I didn’t play it sooner, but here we are. The world of >Observer_ is cyberpunk for the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. All that is bright and glossy exists to cover up a thick layer of decay and filth, and only just barely. The megacorporation Chiron controls all of future Poland, enforcing their will with a team of elite police called Observers. It’s within the ranks of these titular Observers that we meet our hero, Dan Lazarski (Rutger Hauer). After receiving a call from his estranged son Adam, Dan rushes off to a decrepit tenement building populated by lowly Class C citizens. There’s a big difference between your sleek modern mods and the Class C “stapler and duct tape” ones I’ll keep this all spoiler free, but the basic premise is that you have to investigate a string of murders using your special Observer powers. Equipped with two different Detective Vision modes, you’ll scan crime scenes for both biological and electronic evidence to piece together what happened. More importantly, Observers have the power to jack into a person’s brain and explore their memories. This manifests itself as a series of surreal snippets of interconnected thoughts. Each piece is individually confusing, but woven together creates a loose picture of tragedy, misfortune, death, and sometimes even love. Think Psychonauts meets Silent Hill. I mean, I know that in all of MY memories the people are flickering and the floor is soup. >Observer_ has plenty of direction, but overall the four story building is open to explore from early on. Most of your interaction with the tenants will be over intercoms on their doors, as early on the plot locks the building down, trapping everyone inside. There are plenty of colorful characters to stumble across, as long as that color is somewhere between red and pitch black. Each of them is fucked up in their own way, contributing to the overall hopelessness of the world. There are a few side quests to stumble across, each confronting a different difficult question you’ll have to answer to resolve things. It’s all disturbing, but that cerebral kind that tests your morals beyond typical video game convention. Inb4 this guy knows way too much about his neighbors. There’s a great deal of backstory and snippets of the outside that gives the overall world a much grander scale. You’ll learn about gene splicing, a mysterious plague called the Nanophage, the omnipresent Chiron corporation, vast VR networks, cults of unaugmented humans, and a number of other things that gives >Observer_ the sense of something much grander beyond the walls of the building you’re trapped in. Despite the breadth of the universe it seeks to create, the story of >Observer_ is actually very focused. Even the more surreal bits eventually make sense While most games would seek to tackle these grand sweeping problems—cure the Nanophage, take down Chiron, free the world from corporate oppression, wake everyone up from their VR slumber, etc.— >Observer_ is content to just solve the one little problem of Dan and his son. The murder mystery is all in service of that, and even the big plot twist at the end doesn’t go beyond the little moral struggle of Dan. Focusing on Dan and his investigation lets the game be much more personal than most cyberpunk settings would allow for. Even in this strange world (and even as a half machine mind reading thought policeman), Dan is human. So far I’ve been pretty much all praise for >Observer_, and it deserves it. Unfortunately, the exceptional craft and artistic vision of >Observer_ makes the shortcomings all that much more abrasive. My big one I already mentioned. I seriously felt like this game was punching me in the face with its visuals. Don’t get me wrong, the game is absolutely beautiful. But the amount of times I had to pause and give my eyes a break was staggering. Some segments with silhouette figurines bouncing around like a topical YouTuber made me physically ill. It sucks, because I really wanted to take in every inch of this world. But some of it felt like staring at needles quickly and repeatedly pricking right into my pupils. Please stop hurting my eyeballs They also had a real chance here to make an interesting split between the real world and the world of memories. It does this at the start, with each being horrifying in its own way. The world of memories is erratic, surreal, and free from the constraints of physical law. It can be as horrifying as you want, as unreal as you want, and as metaphoric as you want. The real world is terrifying because of just how far humanity has fallen. People live in abject squalor, gladly accepting the eyes of less fortunate creatures to heal their own. All in service of plugging back into a virtual world while the real one dies around them. If you don’t wana know how hotdogs are made And then Bloober Team just had to go and cock that up by making the real world turn into the same non-euclidean, surreal mess as the dream world. There were some really awesome segments—like the holo-room I had to detective vision my way through—but when the walls started bleeding and doors led to looping paths on different floors the game lost me. The game tries to explain it away by saying you were “going mad,” but I really don’t like it when going mad just means the walls turn to jam and you teleport around like a Portal challenge map. The place was already gross enough, you didn’t need to smear intestines on it. “ Hey Ted, that’s basically what Layer of Fear did, and you liked that!” Well yes voice in my head, but Layers of Fear was never meant to be taken at face value. Whether it was all metaphor, a trip through purgatory, the fever dream of a madman, or whatever, it was always supposed to exist in the realm of the unreal. >Observer_, on the other hand, needs to have one foot in the real world for the story and its consequences to be taken seriously. That all being said, >Observer_ is a fantastic experience. The hacked together, barely functioning building reflects its residents. Even if the distant Class A cities are all shiny and chrome, here in the boonies life is horror. It’s genuinely disturbing, and frightening beyond the frequent jump scares.
