Contents • • • • • • • Plot [ ] The film opens in Edwardian times in Hocombe Woods, where Doris Mann () and Albert Potter () are courting. When Albert searches the woods for a Peeping Tom, Doris is abducted by a monster named Oddbod (), which leaves a finger behind. Albert, finding the finger, rushes to the police station and reports the matter to Detective Constable Slobotham (), who in turn tells his superior, the henpecked Detective Sergeant Sidney Bung (), who has been investigating similar disappearances in the same woods. After searching the woods for further clues, the group stumble across the eerie Bide-A-Wee Rest Home, and are shown to the sitting-room by the butler, (). Sockett informs the mistress of the house, Valeria (), of their presence, and she awakens her brother, Dr. Orlando Watt (). Dr Watt speaks to the three men, who are frightened from the house when Dr. Watt vanishes and re-appears when his electrical charge runs down. The next day, Bung, Slobotham and Potter interview Dan Dann, a lavatory man (), who once worked at Bide-A-Wee as a gardener but is silenced by Oddbod before he can reveal anything. Meanwhile, the police scientist () accidentally creates a second creature—Oddbod Junior (Billy Cornelius)—when subjecting Oddbod's finger to an electrical charge. After killing the scientist, Oddbod Junior makes his way to the mansion, where Valeria and Watt are turning people into mannequins in the manner of to sell. Bung arrives at the house, investigating Dann's death but becomes infatuated with Valeria instead. The next day, Potter discovers Doris—in mannequin form—in a milliner's shop but no proof can be found that it really is Doris. Bung returns to the house and discovers evidence that links Valeria and Watt to the mannequin but remains oblivious. Believing him to be on their scent, Valeria and Watt use a potion to turn Bung into and order him to steal the mannequin for them. After recovering the next day, Bung and Slobotham decide to set a trap in Hocombe Woods, with Slobotham disguised as a woman for bait. Bung's sharp-tongued wife, Emily (), follows, thinking Bung to be having an affair and is captured by Oddbod Junior, whilst Slobotham is captured by Oddbod. Bung, now teamed up with Potter, makes his way to the house whilst following their footprints. After failing to dispose of Bung and Potter with a snake, the Oddbods are dispatched to deal with them. Bung and Potter are re-united with Slobotham and manage to return Doris to human form but discover that Emily has been turned into a mannequin. A battle follows, in which Albert (in Mr. Hyde form) defeats the Oddbods. Watt menaces them with petrifying liquid but is threatened by the re-animated mummy of Rubbatiti, which has come alive following a lightning strike. Rubbatiti and Watt fall into a boiling vat in the cellar, killing them both. Albert and Doris marry some time later, only to discover that Bung, whose home lacks electricity, is unable to return his wife to human form, and is now living with Valeria. Production [ ] Production of the film ran from 10 January 1966 to 25 February 1966; it was shot at and on location in and. Carry On Screaming was the second film in the series to have a sung main title theme - and the last until Carry On Emmanuelle in 1978. The theme song 'Carry On Screaming' (film version only) was credited as 'Anon' and was thought to have been sung by who appears in the film. The singer is actually Ray Pilgrim, a session singer who sang for the Embassy label. A vinyl 45 rpm version of the song was also released in 1966 (Columbia DB 7972) by vocalist, before he became bassist for the bands and. Charles Hawtrey was added to the cast at the eleventh hour, after American distributors specifically requested him, as he was such a hit and crowd-pleaser with audiences there. He replaced in the role of Dan Dann. In this Spooky Isles exclusive, author ANDY DAVIDSON explains why the Hammer Horror spoof, Carry On Screaming! Is a horror and comedic delight The Carry On films are the epitome of British film comedy. Over 20 years (let’s not trouble ourselves too much with the ill-fated revival in 1992), the cream of British comedic talent produced a breathtakingly successful series of comedy hits which remain as popular with audiences today as they were when they first hit the big screen. The Carry Ons were never better than when they cocked a knowing snook at popular genres of the time. With the Hammer Horror films very much at the height of their popularity in the mid-1960s, it was inevitable that the team would turn their attentions to Bray’s finest before too long. Something nasty is stalking the woods of England and young girls are being spirited away by a mysterious creature. Stranger still,, mannequins which bear a striking resemblance to the missing girls soon begin to appear in shop windows. When Detective Sergeant Sidney Bung and his trusty sidekick Slobotham investigate, they discover that all is not as it seems at the Bide-a-Wee Rest Home and that its proprietor, Dr Watt is hiding a terrible secret which threatens the very fabric of shopfronts up and down the country. Carry On Screaming! Is a note perfect pastiche of the British horror genre of the time. Carry On Screaming! Is a 1966 British comedy film. Of the regular Carry On team, it features Kenneth Williams, Jim Dale, Charles Hawtrey and Joan Sims. Carry On Screaming! Is the twelfth Carry On film and was released in 1966. It was the last of. It is a magnificently creepy film which plays on all the traditional cliches which kept audiences glued, peeking between their fingers, to cinema screens. From the opening crawl through the darkened forest, to the deliciously dark and disturbing home of Doctor Watt and his vampish (and quite possibly vampirish) sister Valeria, Carry On Screaming! Wears its bloody heart firmly on its sleeve; this is a film which sets out to raise chills as well as laughs. Fenella Fielding and Kenneth Williams in Carry On Screaming Director of photography Alan Hume was well-versed in creating a gorily rich palette to evoke terror in films like Amicus’ “Doctor Terror’s House of Horrors” and for Screaming he created a beautifully authentic atmosphere. But while there are genuine scares aplenty, Carry On Screaming! Strikes the perfect balance between comedy and horror. Carry On screenwriter Talbot Rothwell delivered a script which takes in all the traditional Carry On tricks, with highlights such as Peter Butterworth’s cross-dressing, Fenella Fielding’s literally smouldering performance, some delightful wordplay and a superbly arch performance from Kenneth Williams. But the real highlight of the film is the sublime double act of Harry H Corbett, in his first and only Carry On role, and the always-wonderful Peter Butterworth. Here are 10 facts you probably didn’t know about Carry On Screaming! Harry H Corbett was a late addition to the Carry On team. When leading man Sid James was unavailable to join the production due to work commitments, producer Peter Rogers set out to cast a similarly high-profile name. Rumours suggest that Tony Hancock was originally considered for the role, but Hancock’s fractious relationship with Sid makes him an unlikely choice. But in Harry H Corbett, the team struck gold. Kenneth Williams’ character of Doctor Watt is somewhat different to how he was originally envisaged. In early drafts of the script, Valeria was the doctor’s daughter. The pair’s relationship was altered when it was decided that Williams would play the role closer to his own age. Carry On Screaming! Marked the end of the series’ association with Anglo Amalgamated. Following the death of Stuart Levy, Nat Cohen decided to take the studio in a different direction, and the Carry On films were deemed to be rather too low-brow. The theme to Carry On Screaming! Was sung, not by Jim Dale, as fans speculated for many years, but by Ray Pilgrim, a retired session singer who had enjoyed considerable commercial success in the early 1960s on the Embassy label. Carry On regular Charles Hawtrey was not originally cast in Carry On Screaming! When producer Peter Rogers read a newspaper article suggesting that the upcoming film would be all the poorer for Hawtrey’s absence, he brought Hawtrey in to play the role originally pencilled in for Sydney Bromley. A novelisation of Carry On Screaming! Was originally planned. The writer shared his early draft with Peter Rogers who, although delighted with the idea, pointed out that the book was unlikely to sell. The voice of Oddbodd Junior, one of Doctor Watt’s henchmonsters, was provided by Carry On director, Gerald Thomas. Thomas went on to say that his young daughter wouldn’t go to sleep at night unless he said goodnight in the monster’s voice. The car driven by Bung in the film is a 1904 Brushmobile. The Brushmobile was an extremely rare and valuable creation – an early example of a working electric car. It was loaned to the production by Lord Beaulieu and survives to this day as a permanent exhibit at the National Motor Museum in Kuala Lumpur. Joan Sims and Angela Douglas endured hours of body casting in plaster to create the life-sized waxwork dummies. Look closely and you’ll spot that the necks of the dummies are rather fatter than their real life counterparts’. The actresses had to be cast when lying down. Carry On Screaming! Is the only film in the series to make it into Time Out magazine’s list of the top 100 comedy films of all timeat number 99. (Miwk Publishing, ISBN 9018) is a new book which takes a fresh approach to the films. At one point in Sidewalking, the former Los Angeles Times staffer's book about walking around L.A., he listens, 'by turns sympathetic and unsympathetic,' to a prelate; the prelate's church, he adds, is 'both familiar and unfamiliar.' A few pages later, he's contemplating a moment in his life 'that could have been any moment in my life or any other.' In one of his most remarkable hedges, he writes: 'One of the ideas I want to argue against is a sense of Los Angeles' exceptionalism, that this city is fundamentally different than any other, although in many ways it is.' He calls Park La Brea 'a nonlandmark landmark.' He fancies a photo montage that 'reflects back to us both what we notice and what we don't.' Observing another work of art, he writes: 'If a piece of me can't help but be cynical, another piece is equally compelled.' Near the book's finale he poses a question that reveals nobody could have edited this book in a linear read: 'Can I indulge in some Keatsian negative capability, holding two opposing ideas in my head?' As if that's the first time. I don't think that was the suggestion at all. I believe that what O'Rourke was pointing to was a picture of a more modern America, where moving long distances didn't entail the dangers of pulling a wagon train over the Sierra Nevadas and resorting to cannibalism when things didn't work out. That with the car, America and Americans remained a highly mobile society even after it settled into its 'cultural' maturity. Take this section from the article: But my L.A. Existence has been facilitated at nearly every stage, and made far more meaningful, by access to an automobile. I know I could never have learned to deadhead and care for the roses at The Huntington, nor could I have met my once-far-across-town wife, nor tended to either my ailing suburban parents or hers, nor moved to the community I have called home for 25 years, nor become a vice president of a commercial bank, nor attended a college and read all the wonderful books I did there, without unrepentant access to a car. The car gives us the power to experience and perceive a wider range of our own community. The urban planners claim the car 'disconnects' us when in reality, it does exactly the opposite. I think you're taking it too literally. His point was (one with which I agree) that if you have a population that largely lives without cars and is fully dependent on urban mass transit corridors, you're at the mercy of the political districts. But when entire populations can literally migrate away, the individual is considerably empowered. Look at so-called 'white flight' in Detroit. That was essentially a mass migration away from an utterly corrupt political district, and this all happened within my lifetime. The political significance of that can't be understated. Also, to put a slightly different spin on it, look what cities were and meant in the early industrial period before the mass acceptance of the car, compared to what they became after the automobile. Cities were places where people moved to because you had to. That's where the jobs were. Some people in those cities would live an entire life within a few urban city blocks. Now cities are places people largely choose to live in for various reasons largely surrounding lifestyle (which encompasses a large number of things I won't mention). Nobody Walks In L.A. Contd If you take your modern urban district, the poorer people are generally moving out to the suburbs, leaving urban centers largely left to white, upper middle class professionals. While this disturbs urban politicians and progressives to no end, it's actually empowered by the car. Even most lower income people have access to cars and therefore can escape the high cost of urban living and with mobility, achieve a better standard of living. This isn't a failure, this is a success. Urban young people who can afford to pay $200 a month on a parking space to live in the swanky gentrified urban neighborhood (looking at the guy two cubicles over from me) do so out of choice. And when that choice no longer makes sense because life delivers children and other things, they can quickly shift gears and move to an outer neighborhood or even the suburbs but keep their job and commute. Yours has layers, JG43. Here are only a few that I want to mention: Neil Diamond/'Coming to America' - Neil was born of Polish immigrant parents and Los Angelos (from what I am led to believe) has a number of individuals from Polish decent. The Border Patrol Agents in the linked video are non-violent and this should appeal to those who visit H&R. Individuals and families used to admire and want to resettle in the United States for its seemingly abundant freedoms (as opposed to the idea that now, at the least, the U.S. Is not as horrible as where some of them are fleeing from). They throw their enthusiasm into boxy developments that are careful to allow for two parking spaces per unit because, of course, anyone who can afford such a home can also afford a car or two. I had the occasion to be traveling through Bozeman, MT a couple of weeks ago. I was struck when passing these tiny little boxy developments that appeared to have been cooked by a local urban planner who traveled to much more dense, urban city and wished with envy that they could duplicate the quirky, urban living these foreign places enjoyed. There you'd see a block of maybe fifty houses, all jammed together, literally surrounded by what appeared to be alfalfa fields and various patches of empty, undeveloped flat land. It was actually depressing to look. Since mass movements away from corrupt political districts are made much easier by the existence of modern personalized transport (as opposed to mass transit), the implications for the future are interesting. Consider: assume for the nonce that AGW is indeed true and furthermore, that it's gonna be game over for all the existing coastal regions of our planet within the next 100 years. If so, would you rather (a) people be able to take their migration into their own hands and on their own timeline, or (b) would you trust governments to try to make that happen for them? I know I'd pick (a) in a heartbeat. I wonder if people who believe in catastrophic AGW and also dislike private transpo have ever thought about this? I liked Simak. Maybe you, or someone else, can help me track down a book I read years ago. I throw this out into the webs every now and then, hoping someone can help. Their was a book, maybe by Heinlein, about a brother and sister, twins maybe, sent by a corporation to govern Earth, which by this point has become a primitive back water. I still am amazed about how well the author predicted our current communications technology. Only instant communication and data retrieval were done via a chip in the head rather than a cell phone. Not owning or advocating to not own an automobile in California is absurd. How can you possibly get around such a vast and unique landscape with so much to see? If I understand correctly, the book seems to focus on Los Angeles; talk about parochialism and impractical. And from what I recall (it's been a while but it was an impression), I didn't feel L.A. To be as *walkable* a city as New York or Boston. You can walk for blocks and blocks and blocks in NYC and enjoy it to no end in my personal experience. I love Reason, but you guys have a tendency to go completely off the rails (pun.sort of intended, I guess) when it comes to transportation policy. Driving is heavily subsidized in the US; the idea that drivers are self-sufficient while transit riders get a subsidized sweetheart deal is a complete fantasy: Additionally, At the same time, they throw their enthusiasm into boxy developments that are careful to allow for two parking spaces per unit because, of course, anyone who can afford such a home can also afford a car or two. The reason that these developments have two parking spaces per unit is almost always because of government-imposed parking minimums embedded in zoning codes. It costs a ton of money to build parking; what you get is government mandates pushing up prices on everyone instead of developers being allowed to choose for themselves what amount of parking they think the market is demanding. Fine with me too. For starters I hate progressives and progressivism thoroughly and do not believe that anything of importance ought to be decided by counting the opinions or votes of the people. When I was more fit, say five years ago before the heart attack, I loved urban walkable neighborhoods, especially poor and deteriorating ones, where behavior was unregulated activity diverse and prices low. I can't stand to even visit gentrified areas. But always liked to drive, and used to be expert at it. Sure a car-oriented landscape is far different. But if one wants affordable housing that's how it is done. Watch The Goonies instantly on VUDU. Much of the film feels unrehearsed and performances often feel like first of second takes with under-directed actors unsure of the tone of the scene they are playing and the motivation of their characters. Even the special effects, which are crucial to a film like this, are ropey. The early flying sequences are laughable; reminding one of the old superimposition methods. Not quite as great as The Red Balloon and not as well-known, but White Mane is almost as good and does deserve to be better known than it is. It is a gorgeous-looking film, with the marshlands being both handsome and austere(emphasising the wildness of the two main characters and their adventures) and the black and white photography really is some of the best I've ever seen. White Mane is sensitively scored with a lovely whimsical tone, while the narration is thoughtfully written and poetic, telling the story without trying to explain too much. White Mane has a very sweet and touching story, the wonder of childhood is really charmingly depicted and the film shows also the beauty of nature that will leave one inspired. What was also appealing was the relationship between the boy and the horse which is what anchors the film, a familiar idea but you really do feel the friendship and love between the two. The pacing is deliberate but that said White Mane never came across as dull personally, the relationship between the boy and the horse, the way the film looked and how easy it was to get into the story and its emotions were utterly transfixing. Albert Lamorisse's direction is sensitive and in keeping with White Mane's poetic tone and the acting is great, especially from Alain Emery. He looked adorable and gives a spirited and touching performance, there are scenes where he doesn't say a word but his body language, eyes and face are genuinely telling throughout. The horse was clearly well-trained as well, and the chemistry between the two of them was magic. All in all, immensely charming and beautiful but also sadly criminally underrated. The Red Balloon is slightly better but if you loved that film you will find a huge amount to love about White Mane. 10/10 Bethany Cox. The E-mail message field is required. Please enter the message. Jesup and Rama are hit by arrows, but Mathayus manages to sneak into the sorcerer's tent, where he sees that the sorcerer is actually a sorceress, Cassandra. Mathayus is ambushed and meets Memnon himself, who brutally executes Jesup in front of him, and is about to kill Mathayus too. Cassandra, however, tells Memnon that the gods wish Mathayus to survive the night, and to defy them will incur their wrath and cost him his victories. Memnon has Mathayus buried to his neck in the desert to be devoured by fire ants at dawn, but he manages to escape with help from a horse thief, Arpid. Deciding to finish his mission and avenge his brother, Mathayus sneaks into Memnon's stronghold,, and manages to enter Memnon's palace with help from a. He briefly meets Memnon's court magician, Philos, who hides him and then directs him to the courtyard where Memnon is training. Mathayus tries to shoot Memnon from the watchtower, but is forced to save the street urchin from having his hand by shooting the axe out of Takmet's hand, alerting the guards to his presence. Mathayus only barely manages to escape Gomorrah, abducting Cassandra along the way, knowing that Memnon will come for her. Cassandra tries to escape from Mathayus and even tells him that she has been Memnon's prisoner since she was a child. Sympathetic, Mathayus allows her the choice of leaving, but warns her of worse dangers and that she is likely safer with him. Meanwhile, Memnon sends his right-hand man Thorak and a group of guards to kill Mathayus and retrieve Cassandra, but Mathayus manages to slay them all under the cover of a sandstorm and in a cave, while dueling and fatally stabbing Thorak in the abdomen. With his dying breaths, Thorak manages to stab Mathayus in the leg with a scorpion blood-laced arrow. Cassandra, however, uses her magic to save Mathayus' life. As an insult and a warning, Mathayus sends Thorak's blood-stained pendant to Memnon. Mathayus, Arpid and Cassandra then run into Philos, who had earlier managed to flee from Memnon's palace and has perfected an explosive powder he was working on. However, they are ambushed by the rebels, now under the rule of Balthazar. Though Mathayus defeats Balthazar in a fight and earns his grudging respect and sanctuary, Cassandra has a vision of Memnon and his army slaughtering the entire rebel camp. She informs Mathayus and then prophesies that when the moonlight reaches Memnon's palace, the King on High will become the invincible Scorpion King, and Memnon believes himself to be the one destined to become the Scorpion King. Furthermore, she informs Mathayus that if he faces Memnon, he will most likely die from being shot, but Mathayus assures her that he will make his own destiny and they sleep together. The next morning, however, Cassandra returns to Memnon in order to stall him and possibly kill him. Mathayus, with help from Balthazar, Arpid, Philos and the army of rebels, launches an all-out assault on Memnon's stronghold, facing Memnon personally before he can kill Cassandra, while Balthazar confronts and kills Takmet, avenging Pheron, and takes on the full force of Memnon's forces alone. The battle rages on until Mathayus is shot by a guard as in Cassandra's vision. As Memnon takes his place in the House of Scorpio to become the Scorpion King, Cassandra kills the guard while Mathayus retrieves his bow, pulls the arrow out of his shoulder and uses it to shoot the exhausted Memnon, sending him off the edge of the roof just as Philos and Arpid use the explosive powder to destroy the palace's foundation stone, bringing down the bulk of Memnon's forces. Memnon is consumed by the flames as he falls to his death. With the battle over, the remnants of Memnon's army bow before Mathayus, who by their law is their new king, the Scorpion King. In the aftermath, Mathayus and Balthazar share a good-natured farewell as the latter returns to his own kingdom. Cassandra tells Mathayus that she sees a period of peace and prosperity coming, but warns him that it will. Undeterred, Mathayus decides that they will make their own destiny.
