Peter Bohlin may be best known as the designer of the iconic Apple stores in New York. He was also responsible for the Pixar Animation Studios in Emeryville, California, not to mention the Newport Beach Civic Center. But he and the firm he founded back in 1965—today, encompassing five offices, 11 principals, and 190 employees—has never stopped designing houses, sometimes even quite modest ones. It seems to me that when you’re an architect you’re going to delve into all sorts of things and at all scales. Houses have always been interesting little laboratories in that they’re about creating spaces for individuals. You want to get at not only what the clients need, but also what they desire. One client happened to say that when she was a child she wanted to be able to lie in bed and look up at the moon. I made sure to design a bedroom from which she can watch the moon, which first involved charting its movement. You can do detailing in homes that is harder to do in commercial projects. Like that weathered green door set in the larger new front door at Tusen Takk, in Michigan? The smaller door was from the client family’s old fishing shack—a tie back to where they used to live. It makes that new door so much richer. Color is threaded through that house—the stair treads are a red that’s a little Dutch modernist. I’ve always been very interested in color. And, it seems, in houses that unfold in some way, revealing themselves as you approach and move through them. Unfold—that’s a good term. When I was in high school, I spelunked, and that taught me about titillation—about seeing but not immediately getting someplace. You can build in that sense of discovery when you’re designing a house (though the best ones aren’t so obvious about it). You’ve raised many of your houses up on stilts, preserving the landscape but also enabling you to build on sloped sites. With the house I built in Connecticut for my parents years ago, the slope was significant. In spring, there was a lot of runoff, and you wanted to pick your skirts up out of all that rushing water. With Tusen Takk, we were building in a sensitive environment: on lakeside dunes in a forest. We were restricted to structures of a certain size on two adjacent dunes. We put the main house on one dune and the guesthouse on the other, connected by a covered boardwalk resting on little toes. Those settings are strikingly beautiful. What happens when a client comes to you with a sorry-looking site? Then you design for that. One site was in a subdivision; it was not a situation where you want to look out. So we made a courtyard building, designing the house around a great outdoor space. Almost all the rooms connect to that courtyard. It became a special world for them. You have long designed houses to take advantage of natural light and breeze. How has your thinking on sustainability evolved? You can do LEED and all that stuff, do regular architecture and work the numbers. But for me it goes beyond using the right glass and making sure there’s enough insulation. You have to meet the numbers, but you can also make very rich places that resonate for people emotionally. Your Pittsburgh office is not far from Fallingwater. How did you approach the design of the new student residences there? Well, it was clear we had to do something really good. Here’s one of the great buildings in the world and certainly in the U.S., and we wanted to do right by it. That meant seeming not to try too hard. The ’s Fallingwater residency program needed to accommodate more students and had a tight budget. There’s this funny little prefab split-level from the 1960’s that they’d been using for housing. You could sleep eight to 10 people in there, and it had a kitchen and dining room. The building was useful, so why get rid of it? Instead, we added an outdoor passageway that connects it to a new screened-in porch and new bedroom units. If you can save something rather than doing all-new construction, that’s one of best things you can do in our world. You started your practice in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, rather than in, say, a big city. How did that influence your firm’s development? I considered going to Philadelphia. I loved Louis Kahn’s work. I also thought of going to work in Eero Saarinen’s office in New Haven, which was what many of my classmates did. But by the time I got out of, which I attended after, I wanted to do my own architecture. My mom and dad had moved to northeast Pennsylvania. I thought I’d work there a couple years, and I teamed up with Dick Powell, who already had a license. We became known because of the work we did and also because a number of our early projects were published. That spun us loose. Starting the practice there could have been a terrible trap. But it worked out rather well. These days you have five offices—including one in Philadelphia—but no headquarters. How does that work? The whole idea of having a headquarters is unnecessary today, particularly when you have a great many terrific people like we do, partners and others, and you believe in a practice that is not top-down. We’re videoconferencing constantly. These days I’m not functioning as a typical principal—I’m more of a nomad, traveling between offices, seeing clients. With the exception of that house I designed for my parents early in my career, all the work we’ve talked about today was done with other people. I do believe we do our best when we work together.

The Brothers Grimsby is the second film I’ve recently seen with a gag like that. The Brothers Grimsby movie reviews & Metacritic score: Nobby (Sacha Baron Cohen) has everything a man from the poor English fishing town of Grimsby could wan. As the old saying goes, dying is easy and comedy is hard. Particularly with some of these raunchy comedies, they have a small target audience to hit and when they miss, they’re off by an enormous proportion. Although every comedy star has a fair share of lows, many people in the industry question whether Baron Cohen’s edgy sense of humor has lost its big-screen luster. What was novel in Borat ($26.5M FSS, $128.5M domestic B.O.) has become tired even with the comedian’s fan base, which has aged significantly in the four years since Paramount’s The Dictator ($17.4M FSS, $60M). CinemaScore reports that The Brothers Grimsby drew 72% over 25, versus The Dictator’s potent under-25 crowd of 56%. What also doesn’t help The Brothers Grimsby is that it’s opening during a weekend where the under/over 25 crowds are more distracted by J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi thriller production 10 Cloverfield Lane ($24.5M) and 20th Century Fox’s R-rated Deadpool, which is still doing double-digit business ($10.5M) in its fifth session. While he’s a respected multi-faceted actor outside of comedy, tapped by such directors as Martin Scorsese, Tim Burton and Tom Hooper, Baron Cohen will no doubt face hurdles in mounting his next studio gross-out comedy. He handcuffed himself to Today‘s Matt Lauer, did radio interviews as Nobby and returned to his man-on-the-street bit for Conan, TruTV and Adult Swim, asking pedestrians for their thoughts on Sacha Baron Cohen. While the folks interviewed had strong opinions about the actor, they didn’t recognize him. But unfortunately, no amount of self-tubthumping could save Brothers Grimsby. The few who showed up were mostly happy, giving a CinemaScore of B+. But with grosses this low, a high CinemaScore rating can’t save a film. Brothers Grimsby‘s grade comes with a 3.2 multiple which means it will final at $10M. Donald Trump recently boasted of his acumen by recalling that he immediately walked out of an Ali G interview, the dim Mr. G having been a satirical character created by Baron Cohen at the start of his comedic reality exploits back in the day. With the characters Borat and Bruno, Baron Cohen was similarly outrageously prankish, but by the time he decided to impersonate a Middle Eastern despot, Baron Cohen was too famous to successfully pull off the kinds of stunts he used to; hence, 2012’s “” went for a concentrated, frenetic double-barreled approach of spectacular crassness and scattershot satire. His latest project, “The Brothers Grimsby,” finds him continuing in that mode. The movie’s premise, to U.S. Eyes at least, appears to be a send-up of tech-crazy conspiracy-driven spy pictures, and it is that. But it’s also a merciless lampoon of certain types in the contemporary British working class; “Grimsby” isn’t the surname of the brothers played by and Baron Cohen but rather the real name of a real British town, a no-longer-booming seaport that has been named the worst place to live in England by more than one publication. The movie opens with Baron Cohen’s pudgy sideburned character Nobby having a go with his sex partner to R. Kelly’s “Bump and Grind'; a cutaway reveals that he’s gone at it in a mattress store, and the next shots show Nobby carrying the mattress on to a bus. This is one of the film’s milder gags. It so happens that football-loving, multiple-child-rearing Nobby has a younger brother he misses so terribly he’s kept his childhood bedroom intact. That brother is Strong’s character, Sebastian, now a super-kitted-out-undercover agent for British intelligence. Nobby gets wind of his brother’s whereabouts and messes up a mission, inadvertently causing the actor to get infected by HIV. It’s complicated. Once reunited, the brothers are compelled to act in tandem to prevent a greater contagion from sweeping the world. Am I giving a plot description here? I am, and I don’t know why. The storyline of “The Brothers Grimsby,” like almost everything else about the movie, is simultaneously labored and half-assed. It’s one of those movies that’s barely a movie; scenes don’t follow any discernible logic, the action is incoherent when it’s not deliberately inane, and so on. (The director is, of “” fame, presumably brought on board to bring an action-genre sheen to the proceedings, which he does not really do.) The scenario is almost exclusively in the service of the set pieces, which are terrifically invested in raising the stakes for gross-out humor. Again, a small firework protruding from Nobby’s butt in an early scene in the film is the stuff of one of the movie’s most refined jokes. Later on there’s a riff on the “suck out the poison” bit from ’s “Bananas,” updated and firmly planted into the world of that sexual practice introduced to moviegoers of cult persuasion by ’ “.” Almost all the gross-out humor here recalls Waters’ work. It’s as if the ethos of “” was filtered through a bad jag on crystal meth, with a lot of visual effects money thrown after it. While it’s interesting to see that this kind of stuff, which used to be relatively unspeakable in the nicer homes of America, has entered entertainment’s mainstream, it’s also, frankly, a little dispiriting. Maybe that’s because it all gets so predictable after a while. When Nobby and Sebastian are fleeing from assassins in Africa, they come across a herd of elephants migrating across a plain. Where are they to hide among all these wild animals? Unfortunately for me, I was able to guess without much effort. More dispiriting is watching allowing herself to be reduced to a sight gag in a scene directly prior to the one with the elephants. Sure, it’s arguably laudable that the “Precious” star has a raucous sense of humor about herself. And it’s also true that none of the other performers here, save maybe,, and Baron Cohen’s wife (the movie has a big and wide-ranging cast, which also includes, and you’d never guess what kind of character she plays) escape the movie with their dignity intact. But there’s something a little opportunistic about the way Sidibe is used here. Is the movie entirely without laughs? I chuckled appreciatively not at the gross-out humor but at some of the dry reactions the characters had after their body-function ordeals. The bit where Nobby discovers how much “fun” it can be to use a gun is nasty but chortle-inducing, and some sharp social observation humor sneaks in at the movie’s margins. But as a full movie experience this did not drop my jaw in a consistently enjoyable way. And the movie’s Trump joke is pretty ineffectual. Packed together inside this 'Hope-less' place of low-life, and acutely destitute estate are some of the most inhuman bacterial scourges that are left to their own devices; The Junkies, who will have anything that resembles a valuable meal ticket for their next hit of heroin. The Bikers, headed by Angry (Angry Anderson), whose authority and rule over parts of Sunnyvale echo his warnings to stay out of his way, and then there is Kev, Franky, Shazza and Vanessa - together they make up the estate into what is it today. The story of 'Sunnyvale' is told through the experiences and guidance of Shazzas' Uncle Bazza, whose daily life revolves around the slot machines, pub and pleasurable assertions while under the stupor of alcohol. And the story which he tells us is the quest of Shazza scattering her old Mom's ashes of 'Aires. Paul Fenech is something of a spectre lingering on the peripheries of the Australian pop culture landscape, a high-powered troller who flings fireballs of low-brow comedy usually involving niche groups — ethnic minorities, the disabled, the job-less, etcetera — in the direction of broad audiences. His TV show Pizza began in 2000 and ran for five seasons, expanding in 2003 to a feature extension, Fat Pizza. The Maltese Australian actor/writer/director created Housos in 2011, which has also, via Housos Vs. Authority, been given a cinematic workout, and is now available on DVD. Like Fat Pizza, the film struggles to sustain a longer format. Fenech’s sketchy point-and-spray style is more conducive to short bursts and channel surfing than a drawn-out three act structure. But his latest obscenely un-PC production, which takes aim at poor, uneducated, disabled, dumb and drug-addicted tenants of a fictitious public housing homeland named Sunnyvale, reminds audiences that Fenech, now 40, is nowhere near as dumb as his characters, and his nous as a filmmaker exists somewhere quite different to the borderline poverty porn he depicts. The diminutive rabble-rouser’s residence in the Australian media landscape is, if not unique, close to it. He shares some of the same drain water as Chris Lilley, sans Lilley’s theatrical flair. The Summer Heights High, Angry Boys brain trust is a chameleon who leaps in and out of gender and race representations, protected by parody. Lilley is safe from criticism no matter whether he black faces, dresses up as a Chinese lady, acts like a teenage girl, etcetera. Fenech is much closer to the ‘real deal’ — an arsonist of crossing-the-line comedy who throws himself into touchy socioeconomic territory and emerges sneering and wolf whistling, appealing to middle and upper class crowds as a concoction of ‘one of them’ and ‘one of us’. Authority opens with an advertising executive talking up his new product — a perfume for plebs named “stank” — and a photo shoot that comes to an abrupt end when rough-as-guts Shazza (Elle Dawe) hurls a brick at a model’s face. Shortly after, Russell Gilbert sidles up to a row of pokies and begins narrating a wobbly storyline vaguely involving Shazza’s cross-country trip to reunite with her estranged durrie-scabbing mother. We meet a motley crew of dole bludging misfits who scam Centrelink, attack the police, crash cars, smoke cones, guzzle booze, hang out by the side of the freeway, have meaningless sex, vandalise and graffiti property and holler abuse at each other with shrill ear-piercing voices, all apparently because they have nothing better to do. One bonding scene between mother and daughter plays, at least to cultivated crowds, like an exchange between two severely mentally handicapped people. “Shazza, I’m fuckin’ proud of ya. Ya turned out real good.” And yeah — the joke, of course, is that she turned out dumb as a doornail and loud as a banshee’s wail. The words “historical document” and “Paul Fenech” might not seem like comfortable bedfellows, but Housos Vs. Authority, while squeamish, skittish and slapdash, is also a no holds barred satire of a socioeconomic Australia largely shunted in mainstream art; a place hard to approach without either dripping disdain or emphatic empathy. A point and laugh production like this, with a stench of truth wafting through it, had to come at least partly from the inside. Luke: I love your work, and agree with your comments far more often than not. But on this one, I beg to differ. First, it wasn’t very funny, even by the modest standards of Oz comedies. Second, and whatever the intent, it reeked to me of an ugly contempt for the screenwriter’s view of the underclass – those who don’t get to share the dream for whatever reason. Kath and Kim was like a kindly documentary on social inclusion by comparison (though, in truth, it’s mockery of those who can’t hit back).
